ah, Venice

Buon giorno, please stop visiting Venice, grazie. I don't think this was the message that the Venetian tourism board wanted to send out into the world, but their Mayor was forced to make the announcement Monday after record flooding. But leave it to Italians to make the best of a miserable situation.



Since I always have the travel bug, reading about this made me think of one of my favorite pastimes, traveling, thinking about traveling and list-making about traveling.

66 Degrees North

I am a sucker for a great ad campaign and I love this one for 66 Degrees North. I also happen to love their products, check them out here (the baby stuff is fantastic.) Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the name of the photographer (not, however from lack of trying) let's hope he/she doesn't mind me posting their fine work on my little blog.

pink christmas

I have never particularly liked pink, but I love these pink Christmas decorations! And I especially love the tree, which is odd because I once vowed I would never have anything but a real tree.

A fine pair

I adore these Hunter boots, classic British style that you can find at Soel or Zappos for about $115.00 a pair. Not to bad for wellies that have been around since 1817.



There are also these fine replicas from Target, they are really cute and there are lots of colors to choose from. And since Target is not upholding a century long standard of style, you can get them for about $24.99 plus shipping.

Recession Declared

Now that we have a confirmed recession (appreciate the declaration there government) I wonder if it will cause me to understand (or do) a few things that my Grandma does like,

• Wash and reuse paper cups and plates

• Keep every ketchup packet that has ever been given to me

• Let food items go dangerously past their best before date and insist that smell is not there

• Any food that gets burnt, toast, casserole or whatever, suggest that char is good for you and we should probably be eating more of it anyway.

Ah, the joys of the depression. As I perused the news this morning I came across an article in The New York Times. "The Holidays Downsized, We're Gonna Party Like It's 1929" In the article the party planner says "The thing about the recession is, it takes the pressure off,” said Mr. Monn, 45. “It allows you to strip away all the stuff that’s not important and focus on what is: friends, family, togetherness.” I suppose it takes a recession to realize what this season is really about. Imagine, a Christmas that was about people and not things . . . huh . . . novel, really.

I have heard so much this year about how things are tight and how people are just going to have to make gifts and get creative, even do service for the people that they love since they can't afford the regular Christmas hoopla. Frankly, I think this is marvelous. Instead of being gluttons of retail we can actually give people something they need, love and time with the people that they care about.

el camino de joey

Our dear Joseph has been on quite an adventure this fall. He is biking the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. (Well has biked it, but is blogging about it now.) I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about his bicycle escapade's and I think you will like them as well. Joey is quite a good writer (he also tells the best stories . . . and then there were 9 billion Italians . . . inside joke.) So wander over to The Camino here.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I will be spending the day with family, eating (twice) and being filled with the utmost gratitude for all the wonderful humans in my life. I will be wishing that we could watch Home for the Holidays with The Gary's and missing them. Then, by the end of the day I will wonder why oh why I decided to try every kind of pie (twice) . . . and will inevitably come to the conclusion that it was totally worth it.
